WEBSITE TELLS A LOVE STORY

Inspired by the heartwarming story, The couple whose love defied the Berlin Wall, Escape from the East timeline design is an experimental and storytelling website design based on its typeface OPTIMA, an elegant humanist sans-serif typeface designed by Hermann Zapf.

"As Germany prepares to mark the silver jubilee of the Wall's demise, their memories interlace with the story of the Eckhardts to show that in the end, even the starkest of barriers and the highest of Walls can tumble with the force of the human spirit.
It's a love story I'll never forget. "
– Julie Etchingham, ITV News

WEBSITE PROTOTYPE

To experience the parallax scrolling effects, please also check the experimental website I have developed. The website visualized one of my favourite W.H. Auden's poem, The More Loving One. I tried to explore the new way of reading a poem.

WHY DO I CHOOSE OPTIMA TYPEFACE?

The historical background and memorial type usage of OPTIMA, I tried to bring the audience back to the Cold War era. The heartwarming tale of young love in the coldness of wars. Shocked by the news "the President of the United States's plan of building a wall between the borders," I want to express my thoughts through the design.

SECONDARY RESEARCH

To have a basic picture of Germany during the cold war, I conduct secondary research in politics, philosophy movement, art, and music.
